Ok, I found this blog to be great for many different reasons. First off, there are some great inspirational poems posted here, as well as great resources for poets in the making. Susan Taylor Brown is a poet who offers motivation and inspiration for other poets, students, families, and teachers. There are sections devoted to development of personal poetry and motivational tools to utilize and help build writing confidence.

Her blog also includes great books to read, teaching resources, reading/writing resources, and great exercises and writing prompts to help anyone aspiring to write poetry. Susan Taylor Brown’s blog and the content within have become great motivational tools that I have adopted for my own benefit.

In one of my recent visits to Susan Taylor Brown’s blog I read through an idea of hers for a poetry exercise under her “Kicking the Poetry Can’ts” section. She suggests to read through the lyrics of a favored song, even write them down or print them out, and model a poem/song lyrics after the song.

See hers here.

So I have decided to give this a try…maybe a little rough around the edges, but it’s a great way to exercise your rhythm and flow in writing that one piece that gets stuck in everyone’s head.

I have chosen the song “Cold & Ugly” by my most favored band TOOL…yes, yes, I know, but I can’t help it, I absolutely LOVE Tool…have been head over heels in love with them for years and years!

So here’s Tool’s song:

FADE

Underneath the skin and jewelry,
hidden in her words and eyes
is a wall that’s cold and ugly
and she’s scared as hell.
Trembling at the thought of feeling.
Wide awake and keeping distance.
Nothing seems to penetrate her.
cause She’s scared as hell.

I am frightened too
I am frightened

Trembling at the thought of feeling
Wide awake and keeping distance
Nothing seems to penetrate her.
cause She’s scared as hell.

I am frightened too
I am frightened

Wide awake and
keeping distance from my soul.
Wide awake and
keeping distance from my soul

FADE

Underneath the skin and jewelry,
hidden in her words and eyes
is a wall that’s cold and ugly
and she’s scared as hell.
Trembling at the thought of feeling.
Wide awake and keeping distance.
Nothing seems to penetrate her.
cause She’s scared as hell.

I am frightened too
I am frightened too
I am scared like you
I am frightened

And here’s mine…though I really wouldn’t know what to call it…I guess “Indifference” or something blah of that nature.

Buried within the heart of stone

secretly kept from the outside

the need to feel escapes her

and she can’t hold on

She’s totally aware of the indifference

She’s scared of her self

comfort doesn’t sink into her skin

the need to feel escapes her

I am standing within

scared to let you in

I’m scared to let you in

She’s fully aware of her indifference

she’s scared of her self

comfort fails to sink into her skin

and the need to feel escapes her

I’m scared to let you in

scared to let you in

aware of the indifference within my soul

I’m cold but aware of this indifference in my soul

Buried within the heart of stone

secretly kept from the outside

the need to feel escapes her

and she can’t hold on

She’s totally aware of the indifference

She’s scared of her self

comfort doesn’t sink into her skin

the need to feel escapes her

I am standing within

I am standing within

I am scared to let you in

I am scared

So this is a pretty cool exercise for writing, especially if you have writer’s block..following a format can sometimes help the words flow. Try it out and have  fun with it. =)
